The Story behind the store...

Posted by Marisa Arnold on

Michelle and I have been friends for over 15 years.  We met as Drama teachers through the State Thespian Organization in Arkansas.  We have spoken for many years of opening a business together.  3 years ago, I moved to the Jonesboro area to teach, which is where Michelle and her family lived.  We enjoyed being closer to each other.  My husband was a veteran who suffered with Stage 4 Cancer that started as prostate cancer and went into his bones as well as other areas of his body.  He lived with Cancer for 4 and 1/2 years and died of a heart attack on Jan. 15, 2020.  Michelle's husband was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in 2009 and went into remission in 2012.  Thanksgiving weekend of 2019 he was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.   After a short fight, and many doctor's visits, he passed on May 23, 2020.  Both of our husbands were 55 when they died.

The Lord works in mysterious ways.  I thought my husband had many years left when I moved to Jonesboro and Michelle's husband wasn't even sick.  Within 4 and 1/2 months of each other we became widows.  We both had our own journey and our own 'fallout' situations to deal with after their deaths, but we realized we needed each other to get through it.  During this journey we have discovered, by connecting with other widows, we can support each other.

We would take several weekend trips together dealing with our losses.  Supporting each other, spending time together, crying together, praying together, and eventually taking hikes (this was 2020, not much else to do!) and having thought-provoking conversations.  Sisterhood of the Widow's Walk was born.  At least the idea...was born.  We still have a lot of planning to do, but realized we have to have funds to make our dreams come true.  So we decided to create this online Inspirational Store and named it after our dream:  Sisterhood Marketplace.

After a tornado that hit our Barnes and Noble in Jonesboro, and the large Christian Bookstore closed, we see the need in our town for a place to gather.  Specifically for women to gather.  But we have so much to learn about being entrepreneurs, we are are starting online, with hopes to open a 'Brick and Mortar' store in Jonesboro soon.

This is about as short as I can make our story...there is so much more.  But the moral is God provides, he plans, he prepares,.....we just have to be faithful and trust in HIM.

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."  Jeremiah 29:11

Thank you for your support.

We will elaborate more on our dream of Sisterhood of the Widow's Walk soon.  For now....I am trying to master the art of creating this online store...figuring out how to get a business license was our first hurdle!!!
